COMBINING SEARCH TERMS

 

Combining Search terms using Boolean Operators

To combine search terms in the Basic Search the Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT can be used.

 

Note: The operators AND, OR, and NOT must be entered in English using capital letters.

 

AND

Finds documents containing all of the search terms joined with AND

OR

Finds documents containing at least one of the search terms joined by OR

NOT

Finds documents containing the search term preceding NOT but not containing the search term following NOT

 

When more than one search term is entered without a combination operator, the search terms are automatically joined with AND.

 

Examples:

 

Combining search terms in the same search category:

 

AND-combination

When no operator is entered, the terms in the entry field are automatically connected with AND. The following two examples will produce the same results list:

General Index:             Berlin Polizei

General Index:             Berlin AND Polizei

 

Alternatively you can also select the same search category in tow different lines of the search form. To connect the two lines, please use the operator at the beginning of the second line. 

General Index:             Berlin

AND     General Index:             Polizei

 

OR-combination

Use the operator OR when you are searching for documents that contain at least one of your search terms.

Geographical Index: Leningrad OR "St. Petersburg"

 

Alternatively you can also select the same search category in tow different lines of the search form. To connect the two lines, please use the operator at the beginning of the second line. 

           Geographical Index:   Leningrad

OR      Geographical Index:   "St. Petersburg"

 

 

NOT-combination

Use the NOT operator when you want to exclude certain terms.

Persons / Names:   Herzfelde NOT Heartfield

 

Alternatively you can also select the same search category in tow different lines of the search form. To connect the two lines, please use the operator at the beginning of the second line. 

           Persons / Names:    Herzfelde

NOT    Persons / Names:    Heartfield

 

 

 

Combining search terms in different search categories:

 

AND-combination

Use the operator AND to find documents containing all of the search terms.

Fulltext:                Attentat*

AND     Persons / Names: Stauffenberg

(Note: "Attentat*" with a truncation with an asterisk finds the terms "Attentat" and "Attentats")

 

 

OR-combination

Use the operator OR to fiond documents containing at least one of your search terms. 
           Persons / Names:   "Scholl Sophie"

OR      Subjacts       :         "Weiße Rose"

 

 

NOT-combination

Using the operator NOT you will find documents containing the first term but not the second term. 

           Subjects:                 Arbeitsdienst

NOT    Geographical Index:  Schlesien

 

 

Phrase Search

A phrase consists of several words enclosed in quotation marks, designating a prescribed expression or a specified word order. Thus a phrase search will only find records containing the search terms occurring in the order in which they were entered.

 

Examples:

"im Braunen Haus" or

"Rede auf dem NSDAP Parteitag" or

"Blut und Boden"
