To
combine search terms in the Basic Search the Boolean operators AND,
OR, NOT can be used.
Note: The operators AND, OR, and NOT must be entered in English using capital letters.
AND |
Finds documents containing all of the search terms joined with AND |
OR |
Finds documents containing at least one of the search terms joined by OR |
NOT |
Finds documents containing the search term preceding NOT but not containing the search term following NOT |
When more than one search term is entered without a combination operator, the
search terms are automatically joined with AND.
Example:
Basic
Search: russisch*
AND revolution
Results:
Finds contributions that contain both search terms, regardless of whether both terms
occur in the same or in different categories (Contributor, Contribution title or
Publication title).
Use
the combination operator OR when searching for documents containing at
least one of the search terms.
Basic
Search:
russisch*
OR
revolution
Results:
Contributions found contain one of these search terms in the categories
Contributor, Contribution title or Publication title.
Use
the operator NOT in order to exclude specific terms.
Basic
Search: russisch*
NOT revolution
Results: Contributions found contain the term russische and russischen but not
the term revolution in the categories Contributor,
Contribution title or Publication title.
A
phrase consists of several words enclosed in quotation marks, designating a
prescribed expression
or a specified word order.
Thus a phrase search will only find records containing the search terms
occurring in the order in which they were entered.
Example:
Basic
Search:
"An
Anna Blume"
Results: Contributions found contain
this expression in
the categories
Contributor,
Contribution title or Publication title.
Basic
Search: "Tzara
Tristan" OR "Tristan
Tzara"
Results: Contributions found contain at least one of these phrases in the categories
Contributor, Contribution title or Publication title; including all contributions by
Tzara, because
the name is recorded as "Tzara Tristan" in the category Contributor.
