Combining
Search Terms Using Boolean Operators
The
operators AND,
OR, and NOT can be used to combine individual search terms
or phrases with each other within one input field or in
different
input fields.
AND |
Finds documents which all contain the terms joined by AND |
OR |
Finds documents which contain at least one of the terms joined by OR |
NOT |
Finds documents which contain the term preceding NOT but which do not contain the term following NOT |
Combining Search Terms Within an Input Field
Both
individual words and phrases can be combined using AND, OR and NOT.
When
several terms are entered into an input field without using an operator,
the search automatically combines the terms with AND.
Please
Note: AND, OR and NOT must be entered in English
and in capital letters.
Only one entry at a time can be used in the input field of the search category
Previous Searches. Therefore, in order to combine a number of previous search
queries with AND, OR, or NOT, it is necessary to use the same number of input
fields.
Combining
Input Fields
In
order to combine different search fields choose either AND, OR, or NOT from the
drop down menu situated in front of the search category. The default setting is
AND.
Examples:
Author:
Lessing AND Mendelssohn
Results:
Works
in which both are recorded as authors.
Publication
Year:
1756 OR 1766
Results:
Works published in 1756 or 1766.
Title:
Wissenschaften NOT Künste
Results:

not the word Künste.
Full Text:
electri*
AND
Author:
Gottsched
Results: Works by Gottsched, containing terms like Electricität,
Electricitatis, electrische,

Genre:
Briefroman NOT Übersetzung
AND
Publication Year:
<1780
Results: Epistolery novels published prior to 1780, which are not translations.
Title:
"Minna von Barnhelm"
OR
Chapter Heading:
"Minna von Barnhelm"
Results:
Works containing "Minna von Barnhelm" in the title or in a chapter
heading.
Please note: Since some editions containing individual works do not necessarily
include in their own title, all the titles of the works or volumes within, it
may be worth while searching with the field chapter headings as well. Doing so
will result in a further edition of "Minna von Barnhelm" being found.
Title:
"deutsche Sprache" OR "deutschen Sprache"
OR Chapter
Heading:
"deutsche Sprache" OR "deutschen Sprache"
Results:
Texts with titles or individual chapter headings indicating that they (also)
deal with the subject of the German language.
When several words are enclosed in quotation marks, only documents
containing those terms in the order in which they were entered are found.
Naturally, phrases can also be combined using the Boolean operators AND,
OR and NOT – see the examples
above.
Examples:
Author:
"Wittenberg Albrecht“
Results:
Works by the author Albrecht Wittenberg are found.
Title:
"Tischreden des Weltweisen“
Results:
All works with titles containing these words in this sequence are found.
