Click Advanced Search in the blue menu bar to open the search form.
A total of 9 search categories are available, namely
to search through the whole text of a document: Full Text
to search in a particular index: Person / Names, Institutions / Organisations, Geographical Index, Subjects, General Index, Occupations / Fields of Activity (biographies only)
to search in specific categories: Document Title, Document ID
Select the desired search category/ies and enter your search terms in the appropriate input field. For searches in the specific categories, Index Lists are available, from which search terms can be transferred to the input field.
You can define your search to particular
- Publications
- Document Groups and Document Types
- Dates or Periods.
These all have individual entry fields.
Titles of publications, Document Groups / Document Types and Dates can also be used as individual search keys without entering a term in the main entry field.
Different search terms can be combined in a variety of ways:
The
operators
AND, OR and NOT can be used to combine
search terms within an input field and to combine different entry fields
with each other.
When more than one word is entered into an entry field, without using an
operator, search terms are automatically combined with AND.

Finds documents containing all of the search terms joined with AND |
OR |
Finds documents containing at least one of the search terms joined by OR |
NOT |
Finds documents containing the search term preceding NOT but not containing the search term following NOT |
Several
terms can be enclosed in quotation marks to execute a Phrase
Search: passages will be found in which the
terms occur in the order entered.
For searches in the category Full Text, a Proximity Operator can be used to set a maximum limit as to how far apart from each other two search terms can occur.
With the help of Wildcard Characters variations of a word can be included in a search: a question mark ? replaces any chosen character. The asterisk * replaces any number of characters.
In addition, for searches in the category Full Text, it is possible to use a Fuzzy Search (an imprecise search), which also finds terms similar to the term entered.
You can
extend the search form by clicking Add row
reduce the search form by clicking Remove row
delete all entries in the search form by clicking Clear Form
To start the search click Search.
Search Results
After a search has been started,
the list of results appears, if more than one document has been found; the results list is displayed in tabs representing the four Document Groups: Primary Sources, Biographical Material, Explanatory Material and Reference Works.
the document is opened if only one document has been found;
a message appears if no results were found.
To display a document, click the document’s title in the list of results.
Saving Search Queries
Search queries are saved automatically as soon as a search is started. With the function Previous Searches you can repeat any searches carried out earlier or recall queries to the search form and alter them.
